Yeah, I Am Internet (YAM): The Introduction

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

What is Yam Internet? It is a play on words. “Yam” is an onomatopoeia, not of sound but, of the phrase “Yeah, I am… .” I’m from New York. Whenever I say or hear someone say “Yeah, I am…” it sounds like “Yam” as in “Yam go-win to da store, wah yuh want?” Translation: Yes, I am going to the store, what do you want? Well, I knew I wanted to do reviews of what’s happening on on the internet just like a newspaper might do movie reviews; therefore “Yam” summed up “Yeah, I am…” thinking this or that about the internet. Tacking on “Internet” after “yam” just clinched the overall theme.
Primarily, the reviews will focus on what can be found via a web browser or internet tool but from time to time, I’ll take a a stab at CDs, DVDs and offline items.
I launched this blog because I am bored out of my mind with what is selected to air on traditional cable/satellite/broadcast television as entertainment or news. I am not waiting with baited breath for “America’s Next Top Producer” nor am I the faintest bit interested in Kathy Griffith’s Life on the D List (because if she is on the D List what list are the rest of us on… Y? That’s just depressing.). The million and one doctor and lawyers shows don’t enthrall me either. Additionally, what more can be said or written about Britney, Lindsay, Nicole or Paris that would surprise you or, much less, interest you? This blog is my excuse to surf… for the greater good of those who are as bored as I am.

By now, you may be wondering what my qualifications are. Well, once upon a time, I used to write website reviews in the late ’90s for a defunct publication called “The Net.” (When it was sold, the new company replaced it with the current Business 2.0 in order to compete with Fast Company.) I only wrote for three issues, June, July and August 2006, but since I wrote about 30 reviews in that short span of time; I guess it can serve as one qualification. Qualification two: My first career was as a journalist for about a decade and I have a bachelor’s degree in print journalism (a masters in education). Therefore, I can write and teach. Otherwise, I am no different from any other opinionated blogger. I suppose you’ll get to know me better the more often I blog.
You can expect to read fairly short - this is actually a long introduction, for me - entries that summarize the item being reviewed, give my opinion, provide a link and my “sweet potato” (otherwise known as the “American yam, even though it is not a yam”) rating. I will not be able to blog everyday but perhaps that is best. Isn’t in better to know that I’ll only choose to blog if I have something interesting to write?
I hope you enjoy the blog and I look forward to your comments, criticisms and/or collaborative agreements!

Best Regards,
Deidra
